The Lunchroom Legends and the Other Modestos

A twelve-year-old apprentice watchmaker repairs a damaged watch and opens a path into other versions of Modesto. In each city, adults sort children into those worth helping and those they can ignore. Then the friends hear adults at their own school making the same argument.

The watch does not offer instructions. It drops the friends into cities that look almost like home, except the systems watching them have grown bolder. Getting back requires nerve, bad improvisation, and the uncomfortable discovery that a dangerous future can begin with very reasonable adults.
